Bethan wins the Lilford Gallery Award at the Turner Contemporary

Posted on: 01/05/2019

Portfolio Art Competition Success

Portfolio is Turner Contemporary and Canterbury Christ Church University’s annual art competition for pupils, students, teachers and community groups across Kent and Medway.

This year the Portfolio theme took inspiration from one of the most controversial visual art prizes in the world, , which will be hosted by the Turner Contemporary in autumn 2019. The competition encourages artists to break the mould by making new work that is daring, different and will get people talking.

Over 1000 submissions were received from across the county and we are delighted that four of our talented art students were included in the shortlist of 106 artworks: Jack and Charlotte in the 14 – 16 age category, Parker and Bethan in the 16 – 18 age category. To be selected for the shortlist out of so many entries is a fantastic achievement in itself. Shortlisted students were invited to a photographic exhibition of their work and prize giving evening on Wednesday 1st May where the winners would be announced.

The presentation was exciting with staff from the Turner Contemporary and the competition judges, including BBC Radio’s Gemma Cairney, announcing the winners for their category. Lilford Galleries are one of the competition sponsors and their founder David Lilford chose Bethan Isaacs as the winner of the Lilford Best Emerging Artist prize. He commented on the quality of drawing in her artwork and on her exciting use of maps to tie the pieces together. Lilford have multiple galleries across Canterbury and Folkestone so for her talent to be recognised by them is a fantastic achievement.

Bethan’s piece will be on display at the Turner Contemporary alongside the other winning entries from the end of June.
